You don't need more than two seconds to assign "Refractory Obdurate" to the dark priest soul of David Eugene Edwards and his band Wovenhand. On their last album "The Laughing Stalk" the band has taken a new direction, away from the introverted folk declaration towards hard and solid guitar rock with a strong Apache touch. The new CD continues this path consistently. Edwards once again presents himself as a charismatic man-catcher who wants to tell about God without leasing the truth for himself. With a trembling voice of thunder he wavers incomprehensibly over the guitar waves. Maybe the individual hooks aren't quite as gripping as on "The Laughing Stalk", but the hypnotic force of the new record is in no way inferior to its predecessor. Relaxed moments are rare. Even when Edwards associates American vastness with an acoustic intro for a moment, as in "The Refractory", the claustrophobic force of the six-string immediately strikes again mercilessly. Moses shared the sea, Edwards will split his fans with this CD. But like every convinced man of God, he does what he has to do. And it does it good.
