Echo Us and their mastermind Ethan Matthews are in their thirteenth year of existence and have reached their fourth album. Their "Tomorrow Will Tell The Story" had attracted some attention in 2012, not only because it won awards for its diversity, but also because it showed for the first time what hypnotic sound Echo Us are capable of. After the first listening session of "II:XII, A Priori Memoriae", the beautiful bell-clear guitar sound remains in the ear canals, for example in "Residuum". There's something nice about this, and it's not too far from Mike Oldfield. The poppy and yet experimental-looking passages could also be imagined on a Kate-Bush work. Even reminiscences of Matthew's previous band Greyhaven, which in the late nineties combined Krautrock elements with ambient and metal, can be discerned, whereby the metal aspect is rather neglected in Echo Us. The often sacred female chants dominate, but sometimes they drift off into Enigma realms. Echo Us walk a fine line between art and kitsch.
