Quite clever is what the Californian Indierocker Foxygen produce on their double album "...And Star Power". On the first CD, the two masterminds Sam France and Jonathan Rado flirt openly with sunny 70s West Coast sounds as they are known from Carole King's heyday. Then they conjure up "Cosmic Vibrations" and intonate a naive, innocent campfire ballad culminating in the four-part "Star Power" cycle, in which the band creates a colourful sound panorama with xylophone, horn section and doowop singing. All this is held together by a melodic bliss that should provide positive vibrations especially in the upcoming autumn days. The second CD, on the other hand, has a stronger psychedelic side, whereby Foxygen don't focus quite as much as before, but rather show themselves to be more eager to improvise. Thankfully a clicktrack was omitted during the recording, so that the grooves sometimes bump a bit, which is what makes this recording so charming. Like I said, pretty fancy, all of it.
