The new Springsteen CD is a collection of older demos and cover versions. And a showcase for the new guitarist Tom Morello (Rage Against The Machine). The title track "High Hopes" is brass driven roots rock, fuzz radio guitar included. "Harry's Place" scores with a modern, electronically pumping arrangement and once again Clarence Clemons' wonderful toad. Even though "Just Like Fire Would" doesn't even come from Springsteen, it has become a classic 70s E-Street band track. "Down In The Hole", in the "I'm On Fire" rhythm, is spookily swamp-like. "Heaven's Wall" and "This Is Your Sword" are truly biblical gospel and Celtic epics for Working Class Hero and "Hunter Of Invisible Game" as well as "The Wall" are once again great emotional cinema for the US nation. At the end a cover ("Dream Baby Dream" by the synth-punkers Suicide), which fits seamlessly into the Boss cosmos. Conclusion: Despite the use of remnants powerful with surprisingly innovative sound, classic 70s fans also get off well and the hymn factor is very high again.
