On their second album, Automatic Sam show how to pay homage to psychedelic rock without sounding a millionth retro. Instead of relying solely on weird riffs and chilly interludes, they garnish these ingredients with a rhythmic force and distorted effects that one associates more with industrial rock than with the legacy of the seventies. On the other hand, it could be said that the Dutch, who are counted among the greatest hopes of their profession in their home country, like their inspirers - the band name goes back to Captain Beefheart - also have the motto of letting themselves be guided more by today than by yesterday when playing with the extremes. Anyway: Despite the "cool" sound aesthetics, the roots remain, which in the end rest in the past, even if subtly, always recognizable. So "Sonic Whip" reminds a little of "Era Vulgaris" by Queens Of The Stone Age - that album, which also switches in a certain direction without losing its psychedelic soul.
