THE NECKS - Open

Kategorie: CD-Reviews | Genre: Avantgarde, Jazz/Jazzrock/Fusion | Heft: Jahrgang 2014, eclipsed Nr. 158 / 3-2014 | VÖ-Jahr: 2014 | Wertung: 8/10 | Label: ReR Megacorp | Autor: BSV

It has been a long time since The Necks constructed minimal, highly rhythmic and melodic structures with bass, piano and percussion for the last time and repeated them for all eternity. After all, the new work "Open" consists of only one track (68 minutes long), but hypnotic grooves are missing. Digital sound sources have been added to the range of instruments. Drones always resound in the background, occasionally undefinable samples push themselves into the foreground, a pulse-like throbbing creates a feverish mood, before deep and at the same time gentle percussion pushes all other instruments aside. Piano, bass and percussion used to form a symbiosis, forming a great whole that was more magical than the sum of the three parts. On "Open" the three instruments alternate. Each one is allowed to come to the fore. But it is more a juxtaposition than a togetherness. Nevertheless, the Australian trio retains their very own sound, creating a deep, unique cosmos of sound. Top track: minute 18 to 28
