The October Equus Quartet consists of three musicians from the Spanish formation October Equus, who have brought the alto saxophonist Alfonso Muñoz on board for "Isla Purgatorio", who already performed on "Saturnal" (2011). This time guitarist Ángel Ontalva contributed all nine instrumental pieces, which are more strongly characterized by jazzy solos than before and in which Amanda Pazos Cosse provides a firm foundation with ostinato bass lines ("Arena Negra", "La Ofrenda"). The lack of keyboards is excellently compensated by closely interlocked guitar and saxophone lines ("Neutoma"). "Nocturno" has practically nothing to do with classical nocturnes like those known from Chopin or Fauré. Instead, the Madrileneans produce nightmarish noises that do not allow thoughts of peaceful night hours to arise in the first place. The lively and playful "Medusa" is more relaxed. And in "Sin Permiso" the saxophone cadenza degenerates into a collective jam. But who needs a permit here? The October Equus Quartet simply takes its liberty!
