Imagine the exalted, loud, rumbling folk of bands like Mumford & Sons or The Luminees and imagine that exalted and loud element gone for a moment. Somehow there still remain sympathetically rumbling, melodically catchy, but somehow also vulnerable songs that allow a deep look into the soul of the interpreter. This is where Nathaniel Rateliff comes in, who of course has already been on tour with both of the above-mentioned successful representatives of the new folk movement. He always takes himself back and yet his pieces sound as if the banjo army was already lurking at the next corner. Sometimes his soulful singing even sounds a bit like the young Van Morrison. Rateliff's biggest problem is curiously his urge for versatility. As long as he plays his calm, but nevertheless tense folk odes, he knows how to please. But when he tries something completely different, as in the failed swing attempt "Right On", enthusiasm quickly turns into rejection. So his second album is a rather mixed affair.
