The quartet from the northwest of the United States of America presents yet another dreamlike, beautiful work that functions absolutely beyond all trends and categorizations. "Departure", the fifth masterpiece of the men around mastermind Garrett Hobba, could have been created sometime in the last five decades, so many memories come back: of the Byrds with their incomparable harmonies, of Pink Floyd's dreamy impenetrability, of Crosby, Stills & Nash because of their groundbreaking similarity, of Porcupine Tree's mark-shattering depth, R.E.M.'s always offbeat catchiness and to Sigur Rós for her legendary remoteness from the world. Yes, you can find it all on "Departure", on its eleven somehow casual and somehow unfathomable jewels. "Departure" is a work like this winter: It doesn't seem to exist, but it does ferment, unfathomable. He's threatening icy cold without mercy. And lets hope for a new beginning, an overwhelming, gentle, mild spring. Here music is like tender, bitter hope.
