The Graveltones are going off like the fire department. What the young London duo is flaring up with the first two songs ("Bang Bang", "Forget About The Trouble") of their debut album "Don't Wait Down" is at least grandiose. Here crisp riffs, cheeky vocals and wonderful melodies are cut out at high speed. Imagine ZZ Top at five times the speed. Of course, things can't go on like this (even if The Graveltones later put "Money" and "Lightning Bolt" in the same notch again). Therefore Jimmy O (vocals, guitar) and Mikey Sorbello (drums) change the style, but without giving up their funny vocals, the stomping grooves, the dirty guitars and above all the catchy melodies. The two of them slow down the tempo, let a song drag itself along quite slowly ("St. Lucia", "Six Billion") and even remind us of Tom Waits ("I Am A Liar") with a Schifferklavier. The operetta-like female backing vocals in "Crime To Be Talkin'" surprise and "Never Going Back" is great fun. What a fine debut.
