In recent years the British singer-songwriter Bill Pritchard has made himself scarce; a new album was long in the stars. All the more astonishing (or even not) that with "A Trip To The Coast" he now presents such a perfect, mature, thoughtful work, which captivates above all because of its unorthodox, intelligent lyrics. Musically, Pritchard clearly refers to the heavily missed Go-Betweens: these feather-light melodies, carried by even lighter acoustic jingle jangle riffs, this slightly enraptured, yet certain vocals, always close to the dissonance, as Robert Forster so congenially masters. And then the Lloyd-Cole-like songs about things you don't actually sing songs about, usually. They are little stories from everyday life, about love and sadness and what you do when you are lonely. But they move so far away from any clichés that you can only nod appreciatively and at the same time hope that Pritchard will record many more such intimate records.
