This band from New Zealand originally started as a solo project of the songwriter Hollie Fullbrock. Since "Some Were Meant For Sea" (2012) they have grown into a full band. Nevertheless the new album starts with "Me At The Museum, You In The Wintergarden" like an early Leonard-Cohen work: only breathed sounds of brooms, bass, guitars. The focus is on Klampfe and the strangely touching, fragile voice of Fullbrock. Also "Carriages" with clearer use of wind instruments and percussion allow the complete penetration into this gentle lyrical cosmos. So you go with somewhere between Cohen and Joni Mitchell on the search for a "Reasonable Man". Strings sigh to it. In "She'll Be Coming 'Round" you treat yourself to a spherical intermezzo between "Ahs" and "Uhs" with a cello and crackling guitars, only to end up accelerating with some drumming. Swollen Rhodes electric piano and accentuated wind instruments adorn "Straw Into Gold" and "Jamie Blue" rides off on finger picking and double bass. A record, sometimes even beautiful to die for.
