The Universal Daughters call themselves a "fictional band". You're right. Alarmed by the fate of seriously ill children in Italy, Marco Fasolo of the Italian psych band Jennifer Gentle (named after the Jennifer Gentle who sings about Syd Barrett in the Floyd song "Lucifer Sam") drummed friendly musicians and a number of guest singers together to record a benefit album. And here it is: "Why Hast Thou Forsaken Me?" 13 cover songs, 13 different singers, 13 different epochs: Blues, Psych, Country, Gospel and Pop from 1920 to 1970, where people like Jarvis Cocker, Mark Am, Alan Vega, Lisa Germano, Stan Ridgeway and Chris Robinson interpret "new" songs by the Bee Gees and John Lennon as well as "old" classics by Washington Phillips, Charles Sheffield, Screamin' Jay Hawkins, Peggy Lee and Hoagy Carmichael. The originals can often only be guessed at, the arrangements sometimes classical, sometimes avant-garde, sometimes spartan, sometimes opulent. These 13 songs get under your skin. It's pretty deep.
