SOPHIE ZELMANI - Going Home

The Swedish songwriter Sophie Zelmani has already enjoyed international success. For example, she was allowed to contribute a version of Dylan's "Most Of The Time" to the soundtrack of "Masked And Anonymous". Now she has started her own label with "Oh Dear Recordings", another important mosaic stone for artistic independence. As with Suzanne Vega, she is now presenting a freshly-rehearsed show of her work in order to bring her own catalogue home with the brand-new versions. "Dreamer sounds a little more relaxed than the original. "Going Home" is a flocky-loung interpretation with a chilly trumpet. Especially the excellent guitar work (Lars Halapi on guitars, Mando guitar and Lap Steel) reminds again and again of Mark Knopfler's ingenious Laid-Back style. Zelmani's voice remains a gentle breath, set in the cosmos of Katie Melua. Emotional outbursts are completely absent. Spherical string arrangements enhance some of the songs. And with the meditative "Aftermath" there's a new song on top.
