Sean Carey earned his first spurs as an accompanist for Bon Iver. Perhaps this also shaped the further career of the classically trained percussionist, who now, after his impressive debut "All We Grow", comes with the successor who quite rightly bears his name. Everything about "Range Of Light" is gentle and sublime. It seems that S. Carey wanted to create for himself and for us an intimate place full of silence. Which he did beautifully. The acoustic guitars and pedal-steel are gently splashing along, the percussion, on the other hand, is reduced to almost below the threshold of consciousness. "Crown The Pines" combines vocal acrobatics with a discreet arrangement, in which somehow, far away, the minimal music of a Steve Reich (which Carey dealt with during his studies) shimmers through. "Fleeting Light" is a rippling fountain of restrained emotions. Emotions at all - hardly tangible, but still always impressively present. Which is true for S. Carey and his Range Of Light as a whole.
