Ulf Wakenius is the Swedish secret weapon on the jazz guitar. It cannot shine in every context, not infrequently it seems too sedate. But on his new solo CD he lets his soul dangle and demonstrates in a very relaxed way what the term jazz guitar means to him: singing on strings. In some pieces the fingers hardly seem to touch the strings, as if the guitar were playing itself. In others, he's a virtuoso on the fingerboard. The form and timbre of the pieces are very different, ranging from classical to folkloristic and soulful to free. But Wakenius leaves no doubt that we are dealing here exclusively with his own world, which he also measured all by himself. Besides numerous original compositions he surprises with a wonderfully transfigured solo guitar version of the Rodriguez classic "Sugar Man". An album for every occasion that not only jazz listeners can enjoy.
