REGAL WORM - Use And Ornament

Kategorie: CD-Reviews | Genre: Prog, Jazz/Jazzrock/Fusion | Heft: Jahrgang 2014, eclipsed Nr. 159 / 4-2014 | VÖ-Jahr: 2014 | Wertung: 7.5/10 | Label: Just For Kicks | Autor: AS

Behind Regal Worm hides Jarrod Gosling, who is otherwise at the mercy of I Monster and Henry Fool, who recently released an instrumental prog album via Kscope. Apparently he's not busy there. Because what he is single-handedly producing here under the pseudonym Varrod Goblinks is a cornucopia of crazy ideas that Mike Keneally, more staccatohafter, couldn't pour out on his listeners. Thanks to many saxophone passages, some of the set pieces are reminiscent of Soft Machine. The manic tribal rhythm in "Cherish That Rubber Rodent", on the other hand, is more reminiscent of magma. The two longer tracks on the album please the most: the 13-minute "Confession From A Deep And Warm Hibernaculum", which sounds as if Egg immortalized themselves on "Ummagumma", and the twice as long "6:17 PM The Aunt Turns Into An Ant". Here the sound artist allows his ideas to mature somewhat and the recipient time to really immerse himself in his sound world. Maybe these two tracks would have been enough for a good album.
