The eighth Neal Schon solo album is basically a trio album. So it's just that the subtitle says: Featuring Mendoza & Castronovo. These are bassist Marco Mendoza (e.g. Black Star Riders, Whitesnake) and drummer Deen Castronovo (e.g. Journey, Bad English, Ozzy Osbourne). Compositionally, the Journey/Santana guitarist with Jack Blades from the Night Rangers has brought in a helping hand. "So U" is not an instrumental, jazz-rock guitar-poodle-album, as you might think. It is diverse and touches on all areas of style that have played a role in the 60 year old's career to date. Nevertheless, the first shot is the direct hit of the album: "Take A Ride" is funky, has something from Buckcherry, various Santana undertones and is above all a great song and shows that the gentlemen Schon, Mendoza and Castronovo are absolute experts on their instruments. Also confusingly beautiful is the Motown-influenced title track. Unfortunately, hardly any other songs can keep up with these outstanding tracks.
