Hiss Tracts, another project from the Montréal independent scene, is making its debut with "Shortwave Nights". David Bryant (GY!BE, Set Fire To Flames) and Kevin Doria (Total Life, Growing) are by no means newcomers to the scene, but established musicians who have long since earned their reputation on the Constellation label. You won't find rhythms on this album, melodies only if you pay close attention. Rather, the duo creates abstract sound images that are more than just drones. Since both Bryant and Doria are guitarists, the focus is on this instrument. Sometimes clearly recognizable as such, sometimes completely alienated. Instruments such as Mellotron, Cello and Piano also provide signs of life and interrupt the long clouds of sound. Occasional fieldrecordings, scattered only subliminally, remind us of Musique Concrète. Hiss Tracts explore possibilities, create electromagnetic atmospheres. However, they are not breaking new ground and cannot permanently maintain the tension.
