For three decades the curling monster King Buzzo alias Buzz Osborne and his band Melvins have been setting the tone in the triangle of punk, grunge and metal avant-garde. On "This Machine Kills Artists" he presents himself for the first time as a solo artist. And solo actually means solo. King Buzzo accompanies himself exclusively on an extremely low tuned acoustic guitar. This has nothing to do with pregeriatric folk romanticism. More like a washed-out punk stubbornness. All these songs could also be played wonderfully in an electrified trio format, but the stubborn artist just wanted to bridle the horse from behind. It's amazing how he can groove and fuzz in this setting anyway. He didn't want to make an infusion of James Taylor, he explained beforehand. Instead, he impressively shows where the sources for songwriters of his quality lie. Buzz Osborne, who was one of Kurt Cobain's early promoters, resisted the temptations of the market all his life. This CD is also stuck across the ear, but it is this irrepressible desire for barbs that makes it so good.
