Born 40 years late or just hopelessly retro? As far as the Swedish trio Palefeather is concerned, both are only half the truth. Because Pierre Stam (bass, guitar, keyboards), Björn Petterson (guitar) and Robin Bergh (drums) transcribe the sound of bands like Pink Floyd or the early Barclay James Harvest into the here and now. They cross (retro-) prog with postrock. An interesting instrumental project that reveals how close these two genres can be to each other. Starting from always melancholic guitar or piano motifs, dark, threatening clouds of sound brew together again and again, but all this is wrapped in soft, elegiac sound carpets of Keys and Mellotron. Wohlklang goes before noisy Wall of Sound. The four tracks (of which only one under seven minutes) are pleasantly not soloist navel-gazing, as is often the case with instrumental albums. The musicians simply don't need that at all. Rather, they create lasting longing, sometimes melancholic moods in the listener.
