Full-time boss of Dinosaur Jr., guitarist and singer J. Mascis is considered a roughneck, but on his solo records he always shows surprisingly soft sides. But he has never been as poetic and dreamy as on "Tied To A Star". The record is reminiscent of Neil Young's countryesque albums from the early to mid seventies like "Comes A Time" or "Harvest". Now Mr. Mascis has always confessed strongly to Young, but above all with regard to his playing on the electric guitar. But on "Tied To A Star" he also makes echoes of the Celtic sides of Jimmy Page audible. And some things sound like an acoustic version of Dinosaur Jr. When he reaches for the electric at the end from time to time, he sets wonderful contrasts, which only underline the poetry of this record. Even the last Dinosaur record was a stroke of luck. With his two solo albums released since then, he has succeeded in further improving himself. This becomes most obvious when he meets Cat Power in "Wide Awake".
