As if Tom Waits had made heavy metal in the early seventies (when his voice still sounded quite human). Lecherous-Gaze singer Zaryan Zaidi has great fun decorating the fast, heavy rock of his band with equally fast and scratchy vocals. It's a mixture of growling and screaming. Above all, his voice spreads a distinct charm somewhere between homage, satire and winking art. His voice fits like a fist on the eye to the simple heavy rock on "Zeta Reticulli Blues", the new album of the quartet from Oakland, California: fast rhythms, crashing guitars, just nothing difficult or complex. It's this simplicity and the stereotype that make it so appealing, because the melodies know how to please. And quite unexpectedly there is a heavy delta blues ("Baby Please Don't Go"), good guitar solos ("New Distortion"), a good old rock'n'roll ("Animal Brain"), a quiet instrumental part ("Dog") and finally a relaxed jam in the title song.
