The American-Belgian Machine Mass Trio consists of four multi-instrumentalists who give us the feeling that there is at least one sextet at work. Also on their new album they indulge in a jazz rock that sounds pleasantly old-fashioned and combines the achievements of Miles Davis' electric phase with Soft Machine and the American SST jazz rockers like Hotel X from the nineties as well as a lot of prog bonds. Their wafting sound meanders, sometimes drifting into Indian, are as rousing as they are stagnant. The Machine Mass Trio does not reinvent the wheel, but relies on the proven. But that makes it convincing, authentic and without any hint of nostalgia or self-overestimation. However, it cannot be overwhelmed by the burden of history, enjoys the favour of the late birth and the freedom of choice associated with it, and thus sets its very own accents. These four musicians know exactly what they're doing. And that's what makes her masterful witch brew so digestible.
