Disturbing: With a bow to the No Wave of the late seventies, Niobe alias Yvonne Cornelius leads the listener into an underworld of acoustic peculiarities and quirky stories. It is difficult to decide whether this is poetry with hypnotic soundtracks or a hybrid of spoken word and experimental sound. In any case, the sounding twilight of Niobe triggers anxiety. Obviously, her asymmetrical combination of electronic and conventional principles of sound generation is not about favors. With her impulsive yet monotonous recitative she finds a strong synthesis of Anne Clark and Alan Vega. She exaggerates and provokes, works out contrasts and is in a permanent interplay of constructive and destructive elements. Niobe seeks pain and lets us feel it. It's not for Saturday afternoon coffee. This CD wants to be heard and suffered with all available senses without distraction. Alone would be best.
