40 YEARS THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW - rice, rice, baby!

The Story

On the way to their old professor Dr. Scott, the newly engaged couple Brad and Janet have a flat tire and get into the horror castle of Dr. Frank N. Furter. The androgynous extraterrestrial celebrates rushing celebrations there. Brad and Janet witness Frank bringing his artificial creature Rocky to life. The "monster" develops a life of its own in the course of the story, because it falls in love with Janet and becomes unfaithful to the master. Frank had sex with Brad and Janet before. Janet's animal instincts have been awakened and she seduces Rocky. Finally, Dr. Scott shows up, looking for his nephew Eddie. Dr. Scott, the hunchbacked servant Riff Raff and his sister Magenta face Frank N. Furter: The events escalate. Columbia, who protects herself from her lover Frank N. Furter, Frank himself and Rocky are killed. Brad, Janet and Dr. Scott can escape from the castle in time.

April, April: The star is the audience

On "April Fools Day" 1976 the film was shown at the Waverly Theater in New York City in a midnight performance. Until then, this was a definite commercial flop. But on this 2nd of April the cinema-goers began for the first time to "play along" and to speak. By word of mouth so many interested people came that the film was shown again and again in the cinemas. Predominantly around midnight. From September 1976 it was part of the good tone everywhere in the USA to act in this film and shout around. From April 1977 the first props were sighted in the audience. Since then, it's almost obligatory not to visit the Rocky Horror Picture Show without it. The souvenirs for a successful cinema evening are:

- Rice: At the beginning of the film Ralph Hapschatt and Betty Munroe get married. When the newlyweds leave the church, the moviegoer throws rice with the wedding guests in the film.

- Newspaper and water pistol: When Jane and Brad come into a heavy thunderstorm, she protects her head with a newspaper - just like the viewer. Or he pulls out a water pistol and aims it at the newspapermen around him to bring the rain inside the film theatre.

- Candles or torches: The line "There's A Light" of the song "Over At The Frankenstein Place" lights the candle or turns on the torch.

- Rubber gloves: During and after the speech at the creation of Rocky, Frank pulls or snaps at his rubber gloves three times. The cinema guest imitates this...
