A real surprise is the debut album of the Glasgow Trio with the bulky name Sparrow And The Workshop. Because it sounds fresh and at the same time classic, innovative and at the same time traditional. The band around front woman Jill O'Sullivan skilfully moves between the poles of indie rock and classic late-60s pop with soft psychedelic insertions. The exciting thing is that every song sounds different: the melodic, but also threatening "Valley Of Death", the psychedelic "Odessa", the rocky "The Faster You Spin", the avant-garde title track. It is above all the interplay of vocals, melody and the interesting, often mysterious lyrics that makes these consistently convincing eleven songs so appealing. The three take a risk, try something new again and again, by not letting themselves be committed to a certain style, even if, as the example "Valley Of Death" shows, they are still so catchy. And it's just an impenetrable, mysterious song like "Odessa" that gets this band to the point: You never get what the previous one promised in the next song.

Top track: Odessa
