Back Joe Lewis is screaming for his life. With every track of the new album "Electric Slave" you get the impression that it could be the last one the Texan recorded there. And that with and with full consciousness. Even without the addition "& The Honeybears" his music oscillates between hyperactive and highly intense soulful rock, peppered with blues rock licks and accompanied by a brass section. The album also offers exciting glimpses into the side streets. "Come To The Party" has something funk-"Shaft"-like," "Vampire" would be pure blues if Lewis hadn't discovered James Brown in him. "Electric Slave" is intense and exciting from the first to the last note, but also exhausting and in a few moments even annoying. This album, which sounds both crisp and powerful, was produced almost live in two different studios. Most of it was recorded with producer Stuart Sikes (White Stripes, Cat Power) in Austin, while three songs including the ecstatic opener "Skulldiggin'" were recorded in Dallas with John Congleton (St. Vincent). Back Joe Lewis, that's a name to remember.
