A couple of musicians from The Decemberists and The Black Prairie have started their own business and founded a jazz rock formation under the logo Blue Cranes. Coming from rock, the band follows a rather idiosyncratic sound philosophy. Heavy striding grooves, more reminiscent of Black Heart Procession, and relatively improvised figures of two saxophones and keyboards determine the picture. It is much more about the overall effect as a band than about the unfolding of the individual in the group, which is actually usual in jazz. All the more effective it is when the two brass players Reed Wallsmith and Joe Cunningham lose their inhibitions. Friends of Soft Machine get their money's worth here as well as all those who mourn Wayne Horvitz's far too short-lived band The President. As a guest, Eyvind Kang, the omnipresent violist on the West Coast, who was most recently featured on the albums of Bill Frisell and Rose Windows, was also involved.
