The American guitarist Joel Harrison has served various genres within jazz from avant-garde to country jazz to jazz rock. On his latest CD he now sets off in the direction of the Orient. With the Indian sarode player Anupam Shobhakar, he does not lean so far out of the jazz canon window in terms of composition, but the sound of the Oriental string instrument alone gives the whole meeting a touch of exoticism. Harrison and Anupam don't try to bend each other, the guitarist clearly sets the tone. The songs are dominated by the cutting sound of his electric guitar. But he enriches the music with the intentions of the sarod player. Indian thinking is very organically woven into Harrison's basic musical construction, without ever creating a global village feeling. This makes the CD strong and credible.
