If you get involved in the world of the Astral Doors, there is little you can complain about. But even the Swedish quintet will know that "Notes From The Shadows" will not become a metal classic. Traditional heavy metal, such as Dio or Accept already transported through medium-sized concert halls in the eighties, is the thing of the Astral Doors. They have been in the scene for eleven years and moved only a few millimetres to the left or right during this time. "Notes From The Shadows" is hardly better or worse than the debut album "Of The Son And The Father" (2003) or its predecessor "Jerusalem" (2012). They can score at festivals like "Wacken" or "Sweden Rock". Outside of this scene, however, it becomes difficult to gain ground, because the coolness factor of the band is limited. At least after listening to the album you feel like digging out a Dio album again. Seen this way, the good singer Patrick Johansson, who sounds like a cross between Michael Kiske and Ronnie James, and his troupe did everything right.
