The Chris Duarte Group from Austin, Texas, has a sensational reputation as a live band, not least because of Chris Duarte, whose blues-rock guitar skills are currently being played on a stage unchecked and even more virtuously. Their new album "My Soul Alone" is also rough and unpolished. But this is also exactly the biggest point of criticism of him. Because the work produced by Mike Varney looks more like a demo recording than a sophisticated studio production. Songs like the driving "Leave My Soul Alone" can't do much harm to this reduced recording quality. Other tracks like the quieter, slightly psychedelic "Blue Jean Outlaw", on the other hand, have a fatter sound. Maybe the classic blues rock trio should have indulged in a piano, saxophone or organ here and there. Only on the jazzy Rausschmeißer track, the adventurous and great "Carelessness", does a different sound colour come into play with the violin. One can only wish Chris Duarte a better production and more courage to take risks for future releases, as proven in "Carelessness".
