"It certainly contains the wildest rhythmic concepts I have ever conjured up," says Gavin Harrison about his third collaboration with bassist and singer 05ric. True. On "The Man Who Sold Himself" the Porcupine-Tree-Drummer grows beyond itself. The result is ambivalent. According to his own statement he has no interest in drum solos and so one can ask heretically why he plays a solo over the complete 42-minute playing time of this album. The same applies to the bass of 05ric. He also knocks out one cabinet piece after the other. And yet this is no mere display of virtuosity for its own sake. The result is ten songs whose songwriting certainly doesn't meet the highest standards, but which gain their attractiveness through bass and drums. Certainly 05ric and Harrison exaggerate it in some places. Her playing isn't always song-serving. But every Jazzrock fan will snap his tongue at the instrumental technique of the two.
