Mark Lanegan has only just delighted us with his opulent Krautrock tribute "Blues Funeral", and with "Black Pudding" he has created a no less masterly work, which of course goes in a completely different direction under the motto "less is more". The new CD is a collaboration with producer and guitarist Duke Garwood, who also sets the tone on the acoustic solo guitar in the first track "Black Pudding". In the second song "Pentecostal" Lanegan's rough voice pushes itself over the bright sound of the strings. The precisely staged song artwork gives the impression that it was created in passing. The reverb among the songs suggests space and vastness, some spaghetti westerns may have provided additional inspiration when the brass of the Dobro rattles, the sun sets in the harmonium and the grooves imagine the chirping of the cicadas. Guitars and unobtrusive electronics result in a filigree weave on which Lanegan doesn't have to do much more than just be there. The CD consists exclusively of balladesque torsos in the best understatement, which are occasionally interrupted by improvisations on the guitar, which would give John Fahey great pleasure.
