A duo, consisting of drummer and guitarist, you know that from somewhere? The Picturebooks are indeed in the tradition of bands like The White Stripes or The Black Keys, but their archaic percussion work reminds us above all of the American duo Two Gallants, who received increased attention in Germany a few years ago in the wake of the Saddle Creek hype. Using simple blues rock patterns, Fynn Grabke and a man who calls himself 'Maddin' construct their short songs, often not even three minutes long. The core of the whole thing are percussive arrangements that have a lot in common with tribal drums. Maddin not only drums on conventional hardware, but also on homemade drum formations. The result is ambivalent. On the one hand there is the penetrating sound, which has a hypnotic effect on the listener due to its uniformity. On the other hand, this uniformity, combined with not exactly varied songwriting, quickly leads to a supersaturation effect.
