Pianist Ulrich Gumpert and percussionist Günter Sommer were the flagships of GDR jazz. What's more, they are largely responsible for the fact that GDR jazz is still a branded article today. On their new duo CD "La Paloma" the two old improv anarchists remain true to their old ideals. They declare their unbreakable love to each other and to jazz, but full of ridicule and honest joy, they also make fun of a series of standards, boogies, marches, folk songs and hits. Most of the pieces seem like full-grown cabaret acts, precisely because the humor is transformed with a downright grumpy seriousness. Sommer and Gumpert show how to age without getting old. Both are approaching their seventies, but are full of a youthful thirst for discovery. This CD is so entertaining and colourful that it also guarantees an extraordinary pleasure for jazz haters and beginners.
