With the double album "To Be Kind" the Swans delivered a real monolith two years ago, whereby they discovered the blues for themselves, set off on uncanny psycho trips and set suitable counterpoints with introverted string pieces. Nevertheless, they managed to improve on the "The Glowing Man" announced as a farewell album - probably also because Michael Gira and his proven comrades-in-arms (among others Norman Westberg, Christoph Hahn and Bill Rieflin) wanted to put an impressive end to their career.

Swans

Mit dem Doppelalbum „To Be Kind“ lieferten die Swans vor zwei Jahren einen echten Monolithen ab, wobei sie den Blues für sich entdeckten, zu unheimlichen Psychotrips aufbrachen und mit introvertierten Streicherstücken passende Kontrapunkte setzten. Dennoch haben sie es geschafft, sich auf dem als Abschiedsalbum angekündigten „The Glowing Man“ nochmals zu steigern – wohl auch deshalb, weil Michael Gira und seine bewährten Mitstreiter (u. a. Norman Westberg, Christoph Hahn und Bill Rieflin) einen eindrucksvollen Schlusspunkt unter ihre Karriere setzen wollten.

The Pineapple Thief

Bruce Soord, singer, multi-instrumentalist and mastermind of The Pineapple Thief, has moved with every release. With his last works he further explored the possibilities of "normal" songwriting. On his eleventh album he now reaps the harvest for this sowing. "Your Wilderness" sounds - at least with the first three tracks - like a pure song album by Steven Wilson could sound...

The Pineapple Thief

Bruce Soord, Sänger, Multiinstrumentalist und Mastermind von The Pineapple Thief, hat sich mit jedem Release bewegt. Mit seinen letzten Werken hat er die Möglichkeiten des „normalen“ Songwriting weiter ausgelotet. Auf seinem elften Album fährt er nun die Ernte für diese Aussaat ein. „Your Wilderness“ klingt – zumindest mit den ersten drei Tracks – so, wie ein reines Songalbum von Steven Wilson klingen könnte...

What kind of music is this? How do you define them? Avant-garde? Ambient? Minimal music? Artrock? Cinematic pop? Constantly new drawers with ever more adventurous names are opened by the order lover in the imaginary genre cupboard listening to this music. You can't really squeeze Theodore's debut album, appropriately titled "It Is But It's Not" into any of them. The sound is too multi-layered, too unusual, too emotional to want to deal with dusty categories for a longer time.

Was für eine Musik ist das? Wie definiert man sie? Avantgarde? Ambient? Minimal Music? Artrock? Cinematic Pop? Stetig neue Schubladen mit immer abenteuerlicheren Namen öffnet der Ordnungsliebende im imaginären Genreschrank beim Lauschen dieser Musik. In keine von ihnen kann man das Debütalbum von Theodore, passenderweise „It Is But It’s Not“ betitelt, wirklich hineinzwängen. Zu vielschichtig ist der Sound, zu ungewöhnlich, zu emotional ergreifend, als dass man sich hier länger mit verstaubten Kategorien herumschlagen möchte.

The riffs of the opener "Rebirth By Fire" fly hard as a rock around your ears - the antithesis to the beginning of the last studio work "Sonic Child", which entered rather spherically. "Animal", in which drummer Janosch Rathmer can let the metal animal out, also hits the mark. But the fact that the Westphalian quartet is not on a one-way street is made clear by the third track "Follow You" at the latest. It sounds as good as the Foo Fighters have ever sounded.

Knallhart fliegen einem gleich beim Opener „Rebirth By Fire“ die Riffs um die Ohren – quasi die Antithese zum Beginn des letzten Studiowerkes „Sonic Child“, das eher sphärisch einstieg. „Animal“, bei dem Schlagzeuger Janosch Rathmer das Metal-Tier herauslassen kann, haut ebenso ins Mett. Dass sich das westfälische Quartett aber nicht auf einer Einbahnstraße befindet, macht spätestens der dritte Track „Follow You“ klar. Der klingt so gut, wie die Foo Fighters bisher noch nicht geklungen haben.
