Rise Twain

Die Kumpels Brett William Kull und JD Beck haben als RISE TWAIN ihre Klangsprache gefunden

We agreed on a telephone interview with Brett William Kull of Rise Twain. This is also happening as planned. Surprisingly, singer JD Beck is also in the lead. The friends from Philadelphia throw themselves the balls in a good mood, and so an entertaining conversation develops about their common music project, Jeff Buckley, friendship and the right timing.

eclipsed: When I heard that Brett was part of this project, I had expected Prog à la Echolyn. Instead there is something completely different to hear. What's the matter with you?

JD Beck: He started making music with me. (laughs)

Brett William Kull: (laughs) Yeah, that's a nice way to put it.

Beck: Brett's songwriting qualities are incredible. And I think he needed me to broaden his horizons, not only to play prog, but also to penetrate into other areas. The other way around, it's the same. All right, Brett?

Kull: Yes. But frankly, I don't think about it that much. I write music as it comes out of me, without preconceived ideas.

eclipsed: Your homepage says you wanted to create "emotional masterpieces". Is that really your claim?

Kull: Yes. Above all, we want to be authentic in what we do, without fear. For me a song is a masterpiece when it shows vulnerability and is true.

eclipsed: You are influenced by completely different music. Brett's from the prog, you, JD, the singer-songwriter section. What was Rise Twain supposed to sound like?

Beck: The only plan we had was to record an album. We just wanted to feel our way and see where it took us.

eclipsed: The result is a mix of both worlds.

Kull: That's a good thing. But the approach was closer to the singer-songwriter: You sit at the piano or somewhere with the acoustic guitar and have an initial idea. Production is about bringing out as many emotions as possible.
