Again something new from the new goddess of British Indierock, the apparently only legitimate heiress of PJ Harvey? Not quite, "Strange Weather" is a 5-track EP on which cover versions can be heard without exception. And yet the mini opus is already a special project: on the opener, "Papi Pacify" (originally by the not too well-known band FKA Twigs), serious music wonder child Nico Muhly has taken care of the string arrangements. And on two tracks, ex-talking head David Byrne joins in. Altogether it can be said about the songs, which originate in the original from Suicide and Keren Ann among others, that Anna Calvi left her mark on them as expected. So you hear sultry eroticism that radiates a subliminal threat that can break out at any time. The highlight is undoubtedly the forty-year-old David Bowie number "Lady Grinning Soul" in a version that takes getting used to, but in the end is hypnotic.
