Whether David Lowery calls his band Cracker, Camper Van Beethoven or Leftover Salmon is basically irrelevant, because the staff here and there is as much identical as the stylistics. Now the man has made two albums with Camper Van Beethoven in quick succession, which are conceptually and cover-optically connected. After "La Costa Perdida", which dealt with Northern California, now follows "El Camino Real", which is dedicated to the south of the US state. The music sounds like an annoyed update of the Eagles aesthetics, Lowery's songs are just as catchy as they are leggy. Lowery's uninvolved nasal singing abstains from any sentimentalism, but the band is in an excellent play mood. The album also contains some of the best songs Lowery has written for Camper/Cracker for many years. With its effective combination of sober thoughtfulness and playful euphoria, but above all with its tongue-in-cheek combination of crisp country and bitchy Latin elements, the record surpasses its predecessor by far.
