Chris Thompson, former lead singer of Manfred Mann's Earth Band in their prime, is not exactly known for consistently high quality solo works. This time, however, he has succeeded in producing twelve tracks with which he covers all possible style variations between pop and rock with great skill. Let's start with the sarcastic "Million Dollar Wonder Hit", in which a rock singer pumped full of anti-depressants plays his new song to his neighbour in search of success. The clever piece with its Queen-like introduction actually possesses hit qualities. The cool "Millie Christine" impresses with superbe classic rock licks. In "Eddie Wants To Rock" Good-Time-Rock'n'Roll with squeaky saxophone is announced. His art rock past comes out again in "Dark Side". The piano chords that echo here could well come from Manfred Mann. So Thompson continues to rock his way through the varied programme with his best voice: tough rocker, modern rock with electronic flirts, cello sighing ballad, singalong folk, even a number reminiscent of J. J. Cale and finally a cool blues. Top Track: Millie Christine
