Dragonforce, with Herman Li and Sam Totman as the fastest and craziest guitar doubles, have done well to venture into a foreign studio for the first time. The Swede Jens Bogren (Opeth, Devin Townsend, Symphony X) is now responsible for the loud sound of "Maximum Overload". But it's mainly diverse songwriting adaptations that make the English's sixth album one of the better Dragonforce statements. Besides the usual supersonic bumping ("The Game", "Tomorrow's Kings" or "No More") there are also welcome style breaks creeping in. The slightly thrashy "Defenders" or the Hammerfall heavy "Three Hammers" are good examples of this. Some rather faceless numbers, however, prove emphatically: Without experiments and fresh impulses the band is quickly back in their very own song dead end. And the fast-paced Johnnny Cash cover "Ring Of Fire" at least needs getting used to. The limited first edition includes five bonus songs plus a "Making Of" DVD.
