In 1997 the French singer/keyboarder/guitarist Pierre Emberger (Blue Orange Karma) tried his hand at a rock opera with "Shambhalla". His latest work with his band Freegh, a conceptual work of the same name, is also ambitious. This is based on the book "Berichte von Astralreisen". Here as there it is about out-of-body experiences. On "Freegh" the protagonist tries to save the female principle - symbol of peaceful world order - from the clutches of dark powers. Emberger and the band are musically competent, but without a clearly recognizable plot. Freegh see their musical home in the seventies: Yes, Genesis and Pink Floyd. However, the references are too high. In fact, they rather indulge in melodic rock, which, however, gains profile through careful production. Emberger and Co. are always convincing when they break through the genre boundaries with Raї songs and Far Eastern sounds. Even if Freegh haven't made the big find with their musical treasure hunt yet, Proghörer with a tendency to AOR should listen in.
