Ex-The-Black-Crowes guitarist Marc Ford has a lot to tell, and the former drug-addicted musician on his new solo album "Holy Ghost" does it extensively. With a few exceptions his twelve songs, like the midtempo country rocker "I'm Free", seem a bit deliberate. It seems as if Ford wants to shift down several gears and reach the finish line at a speed of 30. He is accompanied on this leisurely Americana journey by the English band Phantom Lamb, whose last album he also produced. In addition, he has also musically engaged his family. His son Elijah plays guitar and sings like his mother Kirsten. "Holy Ghost" moves, because Ford succeeds in touching emotionally again and again beside all the Americana and Country standards. Even worn pedal-steel guitars can't really bother you. Ford, whose voice seems to be made for this music, makes the listener listen spellbound. The album, recorded in Wales and West England, is unobtrusive and quiet, yet powerful.
