The American tenor saxophonist Mark Turner caused a sensation with his trio Fly. "Lathe Of Heaven" is his first album as a leader since many years. And one can immediately add that under Manfred Eicher's direction the best production of his life has gone by his hand. Never before had he had such a finely pointed tone. With trumpeter Avishai Cohen he complements each other congenially and the rhythm section of Joe Martin and Marcus Gilmore gives the risky mountain hikes of the two brass players a safe escort. The music is incredibly fragile, but still looks as stable as a spider's web. The care with which every note, no matter how delicate, is formulated and made audible here is a great sound art. With this album Turner has finally played his way into the forefront of creative jazz.
