Nine years have passed since the last solo release "Oceana" - a long time, but one in which Derek Sherinian was of course anything but idle: Two albums with his band Sons Of Apollo have been produced, and the keyboard player went on tour with different formations. But about a year and a half ago, the time had come: "I had developed some material and got together again with my long-time mentor and colleague Simon Phillips, with whom I finally wrote six songs for the album." Simon Phillips, who has played as drummer on albums by Jeff Beck and the Michael Schenker Group, among others, is one of several musical heroes that Sherinian was able to win over for the project, either newly or once again
After Sons Of Apollo released their debut "Psychotic Symphony" two years ago, they went on a world tour with over 100 live shows in 28 countries. This has brought the band together, as you can clearly hear on the second album, as drummer Mike Portnoy and keyboarder Derek Sherinian never tire of emphasizing
In the nineties Mike Portnoy and Derek Sherinian played together for five years at Dream Theater. Then the band unbooted the keyboarder in favour of Jordan Rudess, who is still in office today. Sherinian founded Planet X, toured with Yngwie Malmsteen and Billy Idol, joined Black Country Communion and had a highly acclaimed solo career. He renewed his musical relationship with Portnoy after he left Dream Theater in the instrumental supergroup PSMS (Portnoy, Sheehan, MacAlpine, Sherinian). Out of the spirit of this formation Sons Of Apollo were finally acquired, as the bandleaders revealed in the conversation.
