Especially in the USA, Drive-By Truckers have gained a certain fan base through a multitude of appearances. So it's no wonder that on the twelfth album of the band, founded in Athens/Georgia in 1996, the well-oiled live machine always shines through. From the very beginning you can imagine how the straight tracks will hit you live. Even if this balancing act between rock and alternative country is not convincing in every nuance. For example, the opening track "Shit Shots Count" sounds like Rolling Stones on country tracks. This album shows much more charm and character when the journey goes in the direction of melancholy. Like for example in the second song "When He's Gone", which also lives from a quantum of scratchiness. Otherwise, driving midtempo numbers without great outliers determine the action. For some, variety may be neglected, for others "English Oceans" is a round thing - and last but not least an impressive testimony of composure.
