DAVID COVERDALE - Der Cock-Rocker wird 70!

It's a running gag in the editorial office that we should translate a David Coverdale text for the "Further in the text" section. Probably the eclipsed would then only be allowed to be sold under the counter ... Dave, affinity for such innuendos, asks for a minute's pause during the interview when he hears this anecdote, as he is about to undergo surgery for his hernia. "When I look at my pants, I have to say these are the fattest balls I've ever had, but unfortunately I can't laugh, not even at myself, because then it gets painful ..." Shortly before, Old Cov had undergone surgery on both hips. "If that isn't fate! You could say the man gave it his all, though. (chuckles) Oh dear, now I've been laughing painfully at my own joke again."

His start in the big rock business was less smooth. Born on September 22, 1951, in Saltburn-by-the-Sea, a small town on England's northeast coast, Coverdale did launch an early career as a singer, but the bands all operated more or less on an amateur basis. "The passion was definitely there, including that of captivating 15 or 20 people in a pub, but it was obviously nothing to be musically proud of. Nevertheless, the self-confidence grew in me to end up in a big band one day. That's why I introduced myself to Deep Purple in 1973. And I was very lucky that Ritchie Blackmore was looking for such a 'soulful', blues-rock-affine singer for his new songs, for example 'Mistreated', like me. Without Ritchie and of course Jon Lord you wouldn't be wishing me a happy 69 3/4th birthday right now. Because without those two, I'd continue to be unknown."
