INTERVIEW WITH PINK-FLOYD PRODUCER PHIL MANZANERA

As a supplement to our Pink Floyd title story of the eclipsed print edition 11/2014 we document here the complete interview which our author Wolf Kampmann conducted with Phil Manzanera at the beginning of October about the work on "The Endless River".

eclipsed: How can you make an album out of outtakes from "The Division Bell" after twenty years?

Phil Manzanera: When Pink Floyd started recording, which then became "The Division Bell", they decided to record the album like in the old days. The shows of the "Momentary Laps Of Reason" tour had gone well and the guys wondered why they shouldn't just improvise freely as they had done before. They went to different studios, maybe they had some chord sequences in their heads, but mostly they improvised. David had a DAT recorder with him, and whenever they had something up their sleeve that sounded reasonable, he would record it. In this way, twenty hours of jams and ideas were created.

GOTTHARD find back to old form and surprise with new tones

When Gotthard frontman Steve Lee was killed in a traffic accident in the USA in 2010, the Swiss hard rock heroes first had to think about their own future. Almost two years later they dared a cautious new beginning with singer Nic Maeder on "Firebirth", whereby Maeder's vocal talent already appeared. Now the Swiss go one step further on the bear-strong follow-up album "Bang!", in which they show themselves from their rockiest side and only sporadically sprinkle in ballads.

CHRIS THOMPSON wants to know it again with a new solo album

Christopher Hamlet Thompson is a great rock singer. He was in great demand by greats like Jeff Wayne, Mike Oldfield or Alan Parsons. However, his solo career never really took off after several exits and re-entries with Manfred Mann's Earth Band. The quality of our own oeuvre was too unsteady. Now the 67-year-old family man wants to return to the charts with the recording of "Toys & Dishes".

eclipsed: Please tell us a little about the creation process of your new album. With the young guitarist Arno Krabmann there is also a new name.

Kari Rueslatten - Kate Bush and Tori Amos in Norwegian Forests

Kari Rueslatten - Kate Bush and Tori Amos in Norwegian Forests

Kari Rueslåtten is already a star in her native Norway. She is even said to have founded Gothic Metal with female vocals with the band The 3rd And The Mortal 1992 before later more successful, but also more commercial acts like Nightwish. Since 2005 there were no signs of life from this band anymore, but the woman with the memorable voice, which sounds quite amazing like a miraculous mixture of the vocal chords of Tori Amos and Kate Bush, always had a solo career going on at the same time, weaving artistic ethereal keyboard and ambient folk. But also here in 2005 with "Other People's Stories" it was over for now.

ELBOW - Back to the ground

ELBOW - Back to the ground

"I'm afraid the press has misunderstood Guy's statement," Pete Turner puts Guy Garvey's announcement to make a prog album into perspective right at the beginning of the interview. "What he actually meant by 'progressive' was the word in the sense of progress, being progressive. This statement did not have much to do with the musical style of the same name." In the following, the 40-year-old Elbow bassist helps to clarify further open questions.

eclipsed: With the last album "Build A Rocket Boys!" the press has put you almost continuously in the progressive rock corner. Are you comfortable there?

CRIPPLED BLACK PHOENIX - Powerful music, honest from the ground up

CRIPPLED BLACK PHOENIX - Powerful music, honest from the ground up

Crippled Black Phoenix made it. They have outgrown the underground and gained a reputation on a broad level, which allows them to tour worldwide and play at the big festivals. And all this without bending, without giving up her vision of an alternative artrock. Band founder and guitarist Justin Greaves talks about the inner workings of his band and the new album.

eclipsed: "White Light Generator sounds quieter than its predecessors.

Justin Greaves: Yeah, it could be. There's no suitable material for the big stadium skirt, is there? No heavy rock either. We don't think about what a new album should sound like before. There is only one requirement: It should not sound like its predecessor. "White Light Generator has indeed become very intimate. It is very emotional and not as powerful as "(Mankind) The Crafty Ape".

MOTORPSYCHO - To hell with the monotony!

MOTORPSYCHO - To hell with the monotony!

The singer and guitarist Hans Magnus "Snah" Ryan is very balanced these days: As if the relaxed mood of the current Motorpsycho studio factory had been transferred to the musicians. Or was it the other way around? In the interview "Snah" talks about the advantages of purifying songs and why it's liberating that the big hype around the trio from Trondheim has diminished a bit.

eclipsed: Behind The Sun" unmistakably gathers influences from all your creative periods. Were you trying to please everyone? Have you given up your intransigence?

MIKE OLDFIELD - Our man in the Bahamas

MIKE OLDFIELD - Our man in the Bahamas

The news that Mike Oldfield has recorded a rock album again should be a good one for many of his fans. After all, his last work with simple vocals, "Heaven's Open", was twenty-three years ago. And the Englishman, once known for his shyness and unwillingness to talk to journalists, also willingly gives information about studio album number 25. But this doesn't necessarily seem to be the starting signal for an activity offensive of Oldfield. For some time now, the 60-year-old has been leading the comfortable life of an early retired rock star in the Bahamas, who only does what really suits him. And this definitely does not include tours, as he reiterates to eclipsed. The old demons haven't quite left him yet either.
