Effort and struggle have always been central themes in the work of singer/guitarist Matt Page. No different on "Beneath The Dark Wide Sky", the in every respect amazing third album of his band Dream The Electric Sleep. The influences of the musically extremely disgruent trio develop a unique power and atmosphere also on the successor of the already 2014 highly praised "Heretics".
As impetuous as on the first EPs or the longplayer debut, "Lady In Gold" is rarely approached. The hypnotic opening track immediately sets the tone for the new studio work. The piece sounds like an Alabama Shakes number has been injected with a few units of psychedelic blues rock.
Ungestüm wie noch auf den ersten EPs oder dem Longplayer-Debüt geht es auf „Lady In Gold“ selten zu. Der hypnotische Eröffnungs-/Titeltrack setzt sofort den Grundton der neuen Studioarbeit. Das Stück klingt, als hätte man einer Alabama-Shakes-Nummer einige Einheiten Psychedelic Bluesrock injiziert.

"Sometimes the circle closes," singer Ray Alder muses (in an interview that we were able to conduct in addition to the conversation with guitarist Jim Matheos printed earlier in this issue) in view of possible musical parallels between "Theories Of Flight" and the Fates albums of the early nineties. Of course this will hardly have been a conscious decision by songwriter Jim Matheos, but one can attest to the band that the positive trend of "Darkness In A Different Light" (2013) continues on "Theories Of Flight".

Breaking with conventions is Radiohead's core brand. Also in the public image: shortly before "A Moon Shaped Pool" was released and reached the top of the British charts, Thom Yorke and colleagues deleted all content from the band's website and from social media profiles. Of course there were no interviews or concerts either. This attitude of refusal has so far found its counterpart in the famous desire to decompose music.

Auch in der Außendarstellung: kurz bevor „A Moon Shaped Pool“ erschienen war und den Spitzenplatz der britischen Charts erreichte, löschten Thom Yorke und Kollegen sämtliche Inhalte von der Bandwebsite und aus Social-Media-Profilen. Interviews oder Konzerte gab es natürlich auch nicht. Diese Verweigerungshaltung fand bislang ihr Pendant in der berühmten musikalischen Zersetzungslust.
"Steve Gunn's latest album is an ode to the anticipation of a journey into the unknown", the record company raves about "Eyes On The Lines". And continues: "Gunn defines the feeling of bliss in being lost and embracing the unknown." Now, as a music journalist, you shouldn't take label washing lists too seriously. But in the case of "Eyes On The Lines" one could not have expressed the motivation behind Gunn's music more accurately.
„Steve Gunns neuestes Album ist eine Ode an die Vorfreude auf eine Reise ins Unbekannte“, schwärmt die Plattenfirma über „Eyes On The Lines“. Und weiter: „Gunn definiert das Gefühl der Glückseligkeit im Verlorensein und der Umarmung des Unbekannten.“ Nun sollte man als Musikjournalist Label-Waschzettel nicht allzu ernst nehmen. Doch im Falle von „Eyes On The Lines“ hätte man die Motivation hinter Gunns Musik nicht treffender zum Ausdruck bringen können.
